One of the most common questions I get from clients is, “Do I need to get my colours done again now that I’m older?”The honest answer is — no, you don’t. Your colour season doesn’t change with age.
If you had your colours done properly using a seasonal colour analysis, you only need to do it once in your lifetime. That’s because your season is based on your natural skin tone, eye colour, and hair undertone — and while those features may soften slightly over time, your underlying colouring doesn’t change.
This is why the 4 Season Colour System is so effective and timeless. When you’re analysed using this system, you’re given a palette of around 30 colours that are the most flattering for you. These colours don’t go out of style — they enhance your natural features whether you’re 25 or 75.
Let’s look at the Winter palette as an example. Winter includes a broad spectrum: deep neutrals like black, navy, and grey, bold shades like cobalt blue, emerald green, and shocking pink, plus icy pastels. As you age, you may find yourself gravitating toward different colours within that same Winter palette. Perhaps you once loved bold red lipstick, but now prefer the elegance of icy pink or cool grey. That’s not because red no longer suits you — it’s simply a preference shift, not a palette change.
Now, in contrast, if you were diagnosed years ago using the more segmented 12-Season System, that same Winter palette would have been broken down into a more specific subset (like Cool Winter or Deep Winter), giving you a narrower range of colours. So, if something feels “off” now, it’s possible you’re still a Winter — but you’re now drawn to colours outside of that smaller Winter subset you were originally given. Again, this doesn’t mean your season has changed, just that your preferences within the broader Winter palette have evolved.
In fact, many women who come to me feeling like their colours no longer work were simply misdiagnosed in the past. When colour analysis is done right, it becomes second nature — you recognise what suits you, shopping becomes easier, and your wardrobe works in harmony.
I did colour analysis for my entire family nearly 20 years ago. My aunts, who were in their 40s and 50s then, are still in the same seasons now — and they still look fabulous.
So no, your colour palette doesn’t change as you age. But your style within your palette might. And that’s the beauty of colour — it evolves with you.
