In my previous blog, I spoke about how dangerously easy online impulse shopping has become. One tap, two taps, Apple Pay, PayPal, done. No queues, no effort, no time for reflection. That’s the reality of shopping today, especially when Black Friday rolls around and every website is screaming SALE! in neon letters.

But let’s go a layer deeper, because there’s more going on here than convenience and discounts.

Online stores are designed to remove friction — the very friction that used to give us time to think.

There’s no browsing rail after rail.
No trying things on.
No heavy shopping bags.
No cold walk back to the car or carpark fees.

Just ease.
Glorious, tempting ease.

Which is great… until you look at your bank balance, receive 14 parcels you barely remember ordering, and realise half of it doesn’t fit your lifestyle, your wardrobe or your body.

That “Bargain” Isn’t Always a Bargain

Black Friday offers can feel irresistible when you’re staring at 20%, 30%, even 50% off.

It feels like you’re saving.
But are you?

A discount is only valuable if the piece works for your lifestyle and wardrobe.

It doesn’t matter if the price is reduced — if you never wear it, you didn’t save 30%, you wasted 70%.

Ask yourself before you buy:

⭐ When will I wear this?
⭐ What will I wear it with?
⭐ Does it work for my lifestyle now?
⭐ Does it solve a wardrobe gap I actually have?

If you can’t answer confidently… it’s probably not a deal at all.

Don’t Forget: Returns Now Cost Money & Time

This is the curveball no one talks about.

Most retailers no longer offer free returns.

Meaning:

✔ you pay for delivery
✔ you pay to return it
✔ AND you spend your time packing it up
✔ plus queue at the post office to send it back
✔ and sometimes… you forget entirely

And suddenly your “free delivery bargain” is a £12 mistake.

One simple filter before buying will save you a lot of stress:

Would I still buy this if it wasn’t on sale?

If the answer is no — close the tab.

So How Do We Shop Smart?

Here’s what I recommend:

  1. Go in with a plan, not curiosity.
Know what you need before the sales hit.
  2. Stick to pieces you’ve wanted for a while.
    Not 3 minutes.
  3. Shop slowly, not reactively.
    Think before you click.
  4. Know your sizes across brands.
    This alone reduces returns dramatically.

And finally…

  1. Buy for your real life, not your fantasy life.

If you work from home, you don’t need another sequinned party dress.
If you live in trainers, don’t get lured into buying more stilettos.
Be honest with yourself.

Black Friday Should Work For You, Not Against You

It should feel empowering — not draining.

It should create ease — not regret.

So be intentional.
Be smart.
Be thoughtful.
And then yes — absolutely enjoy great savings.

Just not at the cost of your sanity, wardrobe or bank balance.

Because nothing is a bargain if it ends up sitting in the back of your wardrobe with the tag still on.
